How to start a new topic
Anyone noticing a new HFW video posted on YouTube is invited to start a new topic to accommodate it. Or start one for your own purposeSee Note 1. Click NEW THREAD, then fill out the SUBJECT and MESSAGE fields. Use the PREVIEW button to check the finished results until you are satisfied with the appearance and then click POST MESSAGE to publish the message.
CAUTION: Before starting a new topic, verify that the video is indeed new. A late YT posting date may be misleading, because M has been reloading old videos on new channels and the resulting late dates make these appear new, but they are not. Hint: While looking at a YT video, hover the mouse over the link Marina Orlova. If the link is to www.youtube.com/user/hotforwords, then the video is in the original Hotforwords channel and that video would qualify as a reason to start a new topic. Videos in other channels should be ignored, because they are probably duplicates. There are three known channels, the original and two new ones holding duplicate (reloaded) videos.
Guidelines for formatting the original post (OP)2
For a lesson video (a video about a word or phrase):
1. The SUBJECT field format should be
where
lesson-text is the word or phrase being explained by the video and
MMM DD, YYYY is the date the video was published at YouTube (and not at the HFW site). No unusual font effects are used in the field; use ordinary text. The result looks like this when published:
2. The video is embedded near the top of the message using this markup:
where watchkey is the YouTube watch key, which is the character string following v= in any YouTube URL.3 An example of the markup looks like this:
When published, the embedded video looks like this:
For a non-lesson HFW video (a video about anything except a word or phrase, e.g. personal videos about M or her friends):
1. The SUBJECT field format should be:
where
description-text is a brief title for the video and
MMM DD, YYYY is the date the video was published at YouTube (and not at the HFW site). No unusual font effects are used in the field; use ordinary text. The result looks like this when published:
2. The video is embedded near the top of the message using this markup:

If you mess up the format, the admin will edit it later so that users have a consistent experience, but the rest of the post is up to you. Any questions may be posted in a separate topic in the Forum Technical board or send a Personal Message to CampKohler by clicking the envelope icon below his avatar on any message.
For your own topics:
No format specified. Make a simple and clear title that explains the purpose of the topic, preferably something that won't be confused with a HFW lesson/video topics.
Notes:
1. Please put topics dealing with the technical aspects of forum operation or the ProBoards site in the Technical Board of the Technical Category rather than mixing them in with Hotforwords matters.
2. There is nothing technically different about the original post (OP) of a topic as compared to its replies save for the fact that its title also serves as the subject of the topic. The OP is simply the first message in the topic. (In fact, if a message that has an earlier posting date is merged into a topic, it will become the OP and it's subject line will become the subject of the topic as well. In that case, the former OP will be demoted to merely the first reply and it is the responsibility of admin to deal with the subject lines.)
3. The entire YouTube URL may be used instead of merely the watch key, but is not necessary; the forum needs only the watch key to create the entire link. That is, it knows what the YouTube site is and how to create a proper YT link.
