Practical Size Limit of Embedded Images
When too-large images are inserted in posts, the entire Web page will increase in size to the right ("ballooning"). The margin for the text increases likewise, requiring readers to scroll horizontally to see the entire post, which is a bad thing. To avoid this, please limit image width to 700 pixels or less.
For existing images that are wider than 700 pixels, reduce them by editing them with MS Paint as follows:
1. Copy [Ctrl-f] the image from somewhere (the Web, a file on your PC, etc.) to the clipboard.
2. Open MS Paint
3. Paste [Ctrl-v] the clipboard to MS Paint's canvas.
4. Do a Save As to some new filename on your PC, usually using the same filename as the original, but with 700 tacked on to indicate this is a 700-pixel-wide-version, e.g. "some-file-name 700"
5. Take a look at the width: Do [Alt-e] to show the image's attributes and see the width and height in pixels. If greater than 700, you need to shrink the image until it is.
6. From the menu, choose Image, Stretch.
7. Reduce the horizontal and vertical sizes identically (else the image will be distorted).
8. Repeat Step 5. If width is not satisfactory, do [Ctrl-z] to return the image to it's original size and try again. Repeat Steps 6 & 7 as necessary until the image is about 700 pixels or less.
9. Save the shrunken image [Ctrl-s].
10. Upload the shrunken image to your photo service (Photobucket, Flickr, etc.)
11. Copy the link of the uploaded image to the clipboard.
12. Paste the link into the post and within the image code: some-photo-service.com/some-username/some-album-name/some-file-name 700[/img]
13. Click Preview to see how the image will appear when the post is published.
READ: Some image services add a key (a group of random letters) to the filename to make them unique. If you delete an image from the service and re-upload the image with the exact same name, a different key will be substituted by the service. Always make sure the image code in your post includes the correct key, else the image will fail.
Page width ballooning due to too-wide images will occur with the current Version 4 forum software. Version 5 (when it gets here) will have a global setting to force all images to fit within the forum page, and we won't have to worry about this problem any longer.
Links to Images
An alternative to inserting an image in a post is to provide a link to the image. If you wish to give the reader a choice (especially if there are a lot of images), you can link to an image like this: ["http://the-URL-of-the-image"
[/tt]. A linked image won't be visible until the reader clicks the link.
